Supplemental Educational Services
Dear Parent;
In January 2002, the United States Congress passed a federal education law called the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This law increases parents’ choices about their child’s education.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you about this law and the provision for Supplemental Educational Services (SES) that Hope Academy Charter School will provide for eligible students. Supplemental Educational Services are classes or tutoring that provide additional academic assistance to eligible students at a time outside the regular school day. These services must support and be consistent with the instruction provided by the charter school.
The NCLB law requires that Hope Academy Charter School teach grade-level standards, use the most effective methods and instructional strategies for teaching students, and assess their progress each year. Our school’s progress is determined by how well our students do on the state assessment tests administered each spring in grades 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. This progress is called Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP, for short.
Schools that do not make AYP for two consecutive years in the same content area (Language Arts or Mathematics) are identified as “in need of improvement” by the New Jersey Department of Education. Under NCLB, any New Jersey school that has not made AYP for three consecutive years must provide Supplemental Educational Services to eligible students.
Based on the results of the state assessments administered in the spring of 2008, Hope Academy Charter School will be providing SES services to help eligible students increase their academic achievement in Mathematics to meet the state standards. Supplemental service providers are selected from a state-approved list.
As the parent of a student eligible to receive Supplemental Educational Services, you must request services. Upon your request, and if your child is eligible, our school’s SES Program Coordinator will assist you in the process of enrolling your child in our SES program.
Requests for Supplemental Educational Services for grades 4-6 only must be made by filling out the enclosed form and returning it to the school As soon as possible. You will be notified of your child’s status.
If you have any further questions, please contact Heather Minsky, our SES Program Coordinator: 732.988.4227 Ext. 15.
